KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
With the dramatic expansion of demand for wireless data services, the
bandwidth crunch has become a growing issue in global wireless
communications. At the World Telecommunications Congress 2010
(“WTC2010”), held in Vienna, Austria on September 13-14, 2010,
InterDigital® (NASDAQ: IDCC) shared its holistic approach to
resolving bandwidth issues – which is the primary focus for the
company’s research and development activities. InterDigital’s team of
experienced technologists is developing a wide range of solutions to
address the bandwidth crunch and network congestion, areas that focus on
three comprehensive themes of bandwidth innovations: spectrum
optimization, cross-network connectivity and mobility, and intelligent
data delivery techniques.
At the Congress, Mike Wrape, Director of Strategic Engineering for
InterDigital, delivered a presentation, titled: “Bandwidth challenges
and providing reliable, dependable connections for everyone, everything,
everywhere.” The presentation outlined advanced solutions that address
emerging network congestion issues, the industry’s biggest challenge
going forward.
“Spectrum is a precious resource and additional deployments could take
years to implement. Even with new air interface technologies, such as
LTE that will be made available in the near future, merely rolling out
new infrastructure and devices will not completely solve the challenge
posed by ever increasing demands for wireless data,” said Wrape.
“InterDigital therefore is combining leading technologies in spectrum
optimization, cross-network connectivity and mobility, and intelligent
data delivery techniques. In simpler terms, you can think of it as
bigger pipes, more pipes, and better pipes.”
Spectrum optimization deals with advanced spectral efficiency solutions
and new network topologies for the evolution of the cellular standards
for LTE and far beyond. Innovations in connectivity and mobility, which
use techniques such as seamless handover and bandwidth aggregation
across different network technologies, help build networks of
heterogeneous networks and are a robust approach to network off-loading.
Intelligent data delivery solutions deliver more efficient media
distribution across both wired and wireless networks and devices by
exploiting breakthrough media compression, routing, and media search
schemes.
The WTC2010 is an exceptional gathering of leading experts from
industry, academia and government to jointly discuss and share their
expertise and viewpoints. Under the theme of “The Infrastructure for the
21st Century,” the conference focused on the need for new
network architectures and technologies to support emerging applications
and services, the evolving business models to fund these developments
and deployments, and the regulatory and policy issues that have to be
solved.
