InterDigital and Attila Collaborate on Innovative Bandwidth Aggregation Technologies

Company Release - 12/17/2009

InterDigital Acquires Stake in Attila and Invests in Joint Development Effort

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary, InterDigital Communications, LLC, has entered into a multi-faceted collaboration with Attila Technologies LLC, a Technogenesis(R) company spun out of Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. InterDigital(R) has provided an undisclosed capital infusion and acquired a minority position in Attila. In addition, the companies will collaborate on the development and marketing of bandwidth aggregation technologies and related multi-network innovations.

"This collaborative agreement with Attila complements our own core solutions for increased wireless data throughput, improved robustness and a richer multimedia experience," commented William J. Merritt, InterDigital's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Furthermore, the scope and scale of this investment aligns with our plan to expand our capabilities through a series of small, targeted, and opportunistic deals with nimble entrepreneurs in our space."

Today's wireless networks are being challenged by the broad consumer appeal of wireless data services and applications. Virtually all industry observers are predicting the demand for wireless data to significantly outstrip the capacity within a few years. Already, regulators and operators around the world are scrambling to mitigate the imminent bandwidth deficit by trying to allocate more wireless spectrum and to create new ways to manage that precious resource. But simply adding more spectrum is only part of the solution. InterDigital believes that the combination of more efficient use of spectrum, dynamic integration of different wireless technologies, and more intelligent data handling will be required to narrow the gap, reduce network congestion and provide users with a more satisfying mobile experience.

"Attila's innovative software dynamically aggregates all available bandwidth across multiple disparate wireless networks to increase throughput, eliminate dropped connections and improve network resource utilization," said Nicolas Girard, Attila's President and Chief Operating Officer. Frank Ianna, Attila's Chief Executive Officer, added, "We are very excited about our collaboration with InterDigital, which will help promote this innovative technology to the mobile wireless industry and provide Attila with added depth and market access."

Under the agreement, InterDigital has acquired a minority stake in Attila and a seat on its board of directors. InterDigital also made an additional investment in specified technology development programs. The companies will jointly demonstrate their bandwidth aggregation capabilities on live networks at the 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
